Coronavirus Prayer Update 15 May 2020

(English only)

As the governments in some countries allow a relaxation of social distancing measures, people in other countries are still facing the challenges of living with very restrictive measures. The death toll is still much higher in some countries than others. Let’s praise God that in parts of the world the pandemic is on the decline, but let’s not forget to pray for the areas which are still badly impacted.

The apostle Paul said this in 1 Tim 2:1-4 (NLT)

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

Join us in praying for governments and leaders of all kinds around the world as they need great wisdom at this time. Let’s continue to ask God to accomplish his purposes through this pandemic and to extend his Kingdom.

Satellite communication equipment needs repair: Democratic Republic of Congo

Pray for the director of l’Association congolaise pour la traduction de la Bible et l’alphabétisation – Sukisa Boyinga (ACOTBA-SUBO) as he looks for ways to repair the VSAT equipment that has broken down. It is the only way that his staff can send and receive emails in order to continue working from home. They are required to come to the office twice or thrice a week to download and send emails but are not able to do so at this time. This significantly slows down their work. Pray for a solution.

Decisions on projects: Philippines

The Republic of the Philippines is still under a State of Calamity due to COVID-19 and the government is strictly implementing rules on staying home and social distancing. The leaders of the Translators Association of the Philippines led by Executive Director James Daguman are faced with key issues on some translation projects. These projects were interrupted because the translators and project facilitators are locked down in places outside their assigned areas. Pray for wisdom and discernment as leaders and teams make decisions on the next steps. Ask God for creativity as they explore available options, especially in areas with no internet access.

Moving forward: Europe

The leaders of the Alliance organisations in Europe are wondering how best to move forward as coronavirus restrictions are being gradually lifted. Challenges before them:

  • Should staff members temporarily reassigned to the home office continue long term?
  • How and when should staff re-engage in partnership development?
  • When should staff members return to the countries where they serve?
  • How should the Alliance organisations handle the decrease in funding from the economic downturn?

These are some of the issues the leadership are facing in Europe. Ask God to show them the way forward as they meet together and discuss these matters using video conferencing in the near future.

Coronavirus awareness materials and training: West Africa

Pray for the SIL Literacy and Education Coordinator in West Africa who decided to remain in West Africa during the coronavirus period. She volunteered to coordinate the collection and sharing of coronavirus awareness materials in local languages in Francophone Africa. She will promote the need for making vital information available in audio and video formats. Ask God to give her direction and success in this effort. In addition, she is developing project funding proposals and training materials, and is assisting others to do this. Pray for God’s blessing on both the proposals and the training. Pray that God will provide the resources for literacy programs and the personnel needed for these programs during these difficult times.
