Coronavirus Prayer Update 12 March 2020
Christians are not immune to the impact of COVID19. We have an opportunity to encourage each other to place our faith in God. While we should not be reckless with our lives, the Apostle Paul urges us: “Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV). This has practical implications for us. When many are spreading fear and panic we can decide not to cause more anxiety. We can choose to encourage each other to pray for each other, and to trust in God.
Postponed workshops: Singapore, Thailand
Please pray for wisdom as Wycliffe Singapore and Wycliffe Thai Foundation leaders decide on a new date for the ‘Culture Meets Scripture’ workshops. Due to the increased cautionary measures against COVID-19, the jointly-sponsored workshop scheduled in March was cancelled. Continue praying for the workshop facilitators, Jo Shetler and Amy West, who had to rebook flight tickets and rework their schedules. Ask God for patience and understanding for the participants and everyone concerned.
Meeting decisions: Philippines
Translators Association of the Philippines (TAP) staff are preparing for the 15th Biennial Conference on April 20-24. Pray for wisdom for the TAP leaders as they decide whether or not to postpone the conference in light of the realities of the COVID-19 situation. The Philippines is now in a state of Public Health Emergency following the first reported localized transmission of the disease in the country. Ask God for his grace and mercy as the Philippine government and health officials deal with this problem.
Meeting cancellations: Kenya
As a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19, the government of Kenya has banned in Kenya all meetings, conferences and events of an international nature and gatherings of more than 15 people. Some events that were to be held at Bible Translation and Literacy (BTL) Christian International Conference Centre – Ruiru have been cancelled. Please pray for leaders to find alternative ways to meet the goals of these meetings. Pray that God will provide for any shortfall in income that BTL experiences due to these changes.
