  • Video Production of Kaiwá Old Testament Celebration

At the end of August, 2013, the Kaiwá people of Brazil celebrated the launch of the provisional* Kaiwá Old Testament. A member of the Wycliffe Global Alliance Americas Area communications team and a volunteer videographer were able to be present to film the event. Since that time, several obstacles have arisen to complicate the completion of the video. The finished video will be an effective tool to promote Bible translation.  Pray for God to remove the difficulties and smooth the way for the production of the video within the next 2 months.

    * Provisional indicates that this is a temporary publication of the Old Testament for the people to use, while the revision is being done on the New Testament. In the future they will have  the whole Bible, revised and in one volume.

  • Translators’ housing

Translators Ty’e and Wenatoa completed their Bible Institute studies and have recently returned home. Adjustment was not easy for them as they have had to live with other families while building their own house. Nevertheless, helping with the translation provides encouragement. “The translation work is not just for us,” shared Wenatoa. “This work will allow our children and grandchildren to know God’s Word and be saved.” Praise God for their commitment to bringing mother tongue Scriptures to their people. Pray that the house of Ty’e and Wenatoa will be completed soon.

  • Scripture nearing completion

Kaiwá; Brazil (33,000). God is good! A draft copy of the Kaiwá Old Testament was printed last year. Pray that spiritual fruit will result as people read it and apply it to their lives. Pray for helpful input from readers while the 1986 version of the New Testament is being revised. When the revision is finished, the complete Bible will be printed in final form. The team members working on the revision live in remote villages. Pray that they will find ways to work together, and pray that the Kaiwá church will become stronger.

Jamamadí; Brazil (300). Expatriate translators worked hard with local speakers to start a read-through of the Jamamadí New Testament last year, but they need another visit to complete the task. Lift up the translators’ health in prayer as they are retired and must return to Brazil for extended visits to complete the translation. Ask God to provide keen Jamamadí speakers during their next visit so the read-through may be finished and publication preparations can begin. Pray especially for revival; many Jamamadí who once knew the Lord have fallen away and drunkenness is common. May God, through His Holy Spirit, use the translated portions they have so they will say with the prophet Jeremiah, “...His word burns in my heart like a fire!” (Jeremiah 20:9, NLT).

Borôro; Brazil (1,390). Thank the Lord, the Borôro translation is making progress. The translation team is working hard to finish a revision and all consultant checks of the New Testament. Ask God to give Keith and the Borôro translators wisdom, strength, and good attention to detail as they work on the final books. Pray for Heidi as she meets with children to teach them the Scriptures. Pray, too, for the Borôro, that more people will respond to the truth found in God’s Word. Ask God to give them victory over alcohol addiction, a significant issue among their people.

Borôro; Brazil (1,390). Thank the Lord, the Borôro translation is making progress. The translation team hopes to finish a revision and all consultant checks of the New Testament by next year. Ask God to give Keith and the Borôro translators wisdom, strength, and good attention to detail as they work on the final books. Pray for Heidi as she meets with children daily to teach them the Scriptures. Pray, too, for the Borôro, that more people will respond to the truth found in God’s Word. Ask God to give them victory over alcohol addiction, a significant issue among their people.
  • If you have eight minutes

A short video shows the Dâw people speaking for themselves about what the Gospel means to them. It is called Hope for the Hopeless. It answers the question, "Is it worth reaching out to small, apparently dying, language communities?" The video is in Portuguese with English subtitles.

JAMAMADÍ; Brazil; 300. The translation team would like to have the New Testament ready for typesetting and printing by the end of 2013. This year they will finalize key terms, utilize Paratext translation software for computer checks, verify the manuscript with church leaders, and complete a final read-though of the entire text. Ask God to help them find any errors in their work. Pray for strength, good health, and clarity of mind for the team members. Pray that the Jamamadí would keep their focus on the Lord throughout this process despite some disruptions and misunderstandings within the community.

  • Scripture nearing completion

KAIWÁ; Brazil; 33,000. The first Kaiwá New Testament was completed in 1986, and then reprinted in 2006. The preparation for a limited printing of a “verification version,” containing both the New Testament and the recently drafted Old Testament, is nearly complete. It took longer than expected to put this version together. Pray for widespread involvement of the Kaiwá community in providing input into the New Testament revision and the Old Testament translation.

JARAWARA; Brazil;180. Due to insufficient funding, the translators had to put the translation project on hold. They must spend their time presenting the project to churches and individuals in order to raise more money. Pray that God will raise up the necessary funds to help this New Testament cross the finish line. Meanwhile, the Jarawara churches are using a drafted version of the New Testament. Ask the Holy Spirit to apply His Word to their hearts so that they will be eager to use the finished book. Pray that God would turn frustrating delays into something good.
