The purpose of PROEL is to please and glorify God in obedience to the Great Commission, by assisting in the translation of the Bible into every person’s mother tongue, so that all may have the opportunity of knowing the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
We hope to accomplish our role in Bible translation through the study and registry of all the languages of the earth, with special focus on those which do not yet have a written grammar; the furtherance of linguistic investigation and the analysis of languages; promotion of the publication of linguistic papers; and to promote the translation of the Bible and other literary works of high moral value to the distinct languages of the earth.
Nine Spanish founders established the Spanish Promoter of Linguistics (PROEL) in Madrid on May 17, 1989. PROEL is a non-profit, non-ecclesiastical organization. However, even though our methodology involves development of minority languages, our underlying motivation is clearly Christian.
Within the Spanish evangelical community, PROEL serves as a missionary sending agency. One of our primary goals is to serve the church in helping her to fulfill the Great Commission, through a focus on the work of Bible translation and literacy.
In order to share the vision and obtain the needed resources, we relate to individual believers, youth groups, pastors and churches, parachurch organizations, Christian businessmen and women, other mission organizations, evangelical conferences and retreats.
Languages with work in progress are Spanish Sign Language (of the Deaf), Catalan Sign Language, Aragonese, Aranese. There is a definite translation need for Nosa Fala. There is a possible needs of revision in Extremeño.
As the only Spanish-speaking country of Africa, Equatorial Guinea (EG) is closely tied to Spain in areas such as economic and educational development. A large percentage of her citizens are in Spain at any given time. Spanish evangelicals are catching a deep burden for the spiritual and social development of EG, and we feel that PROEL can have an integral part in reaching EG´s language groups with translated Scriptures. During the four summers of 1995 to 1998, PROEL has sent teams to EG, sponsored by [partners] SIL Africa Area and SIL Cameroon, to work on translation needs survey and updating the Ethnologue. Since the year 2000 a member of PROEL has been working under SIL Cameroon in EG.
PROEL is responsible to ensure that all workers are adequately trained and cared for. Our partnership with the University at León and with the Foundation Sierra-Pambley is providing this training, offering courses (master in linguistics) so that candidates can be prepared.
El propósito de PROEL es agradar y glorificar a Dios en obediencia a la Gran Comisión, ayudando en la traducción de la Biblia a la lengua materna de cada persona, de manera que todas tengan la oportunidad de conocer la gracia salvadora de Jesucristo.
Esperamos cumplir ese objetivo mediante el estudio y registro de todas las lenguas de la tierra, con especial enfoque en las que todavía no tienen una gramática escrita, el fomento de la investigación lingüística y el análisis de lenguajes, impulsar la publicación de investigaciones lingüísticas, promover la traducción de la Biblia y otras obras literarias de gran valor moral a los distintos lenguajes de la tierra y proveer materiales de alfabetización así como el entrenamiento de maestros para aquellas minorías étnicas que lo necesiten, colaborando en el desarrollo de los citados pueblos.
Nueve españoles fundaron la Promotora Española de Lingüística (PROEL) en Madrid el 17 de mayo de 1989. PROEL es una organización no eclesiástica y no lucrativa. Sin embargo, aunque nuestra metodología supone un involucramiento en el desarrollo de las lenguas minoritarias, nuestra motivación fundamental es claramente cristiana.
Dentro de la comunidad evangélica española, PROEL sirve como agencia misionera enviadora. Una de nuestras metas principales es servir a la iglesia ayudándola a cumplir la Gran Comisión, por medio del trabajo de la traducción de la Biblia y la alfabetización.
Para compartir la visión y obtener los recursos necesarios, nos relacionamos con creyentes individuales, grupos de jóvenes, pastores, iglesias, organizaciones para-eclesiales, hombres y mujeres de negocios cristianos, otras organizaciones misioneras, conferencias evangélicas, etc.
Actualmente hay cuatro miembros del SIL trabajando en España con lenguas minoritarias y lenguas de signos de sordos. Las lenguas con trabajo en progreso son lengua española de signos, lengua catalana de signos, aragonés y aranés. Hay una necesidad de traducción en nosa fala y es necesaria la revisión en extremeño.
Guinea Ecuatorial es el único país hispano hablantes de África, por lo cual tiene lazos estrechos con España en esferas de desarrollo económico y educativo, viviendo en España un porcentaje de su población. Los evangélicos españoles están captando una profunda carga por el desarrollo espiritual y social de Guinea Ecuatorial, pudiendo PROEL ser parte integral en alcanzar a los grupos lingüísticos de esa nación con las Escrituras traducidas. Durante los cuatro veranos de 1995 a 1998, PROEL envió equipos a Guinea Ecuatorial patrocinados por SIL Camerún, para investigar las necesidades de traducción. Desde el año 2000 un miembro de PROEL está trabajando con SIL Camerún en Guinea Ecuatorial.
PROEL es responsable de que todos sus obreros están adecuadamente entrenados y preparados. Para ello tiene un acuerdo con la Universidad de León y con la Fundación Sierra-Pambley para proveer este entrenamiento, ofreciendo cursos en lingüística para que los candidatos estén preparados.
